The business question · Architecture that documents itself

“Do our documents match what is actually running?”

The concept

Documentation as a by-product

Diagrams and records are rebuilt from the running platform, so they never drift.

How it works
Diagrams and records are generated from the running platform's own register, and a check flags any document that disagrees with it.
Why it matters
Architecture stays audit-ready without a documentation team, and decisions rest on what is really running.
The result
The architecture page on this site is drawn from the platform's own register and checked before it is published.

The business problem

The documents described a platform that did not exist.

Documentation is out of date the day it is written, and Gartner ties abandoned projects to poor data quality. Early on, several AI-drafted architecture documents disagreed with each other and described parts that were never built.

Why this concept

Generate the documents from the running platform and check them automatically

A document that rebuilds from the system cannot drift, and a check that compares them catches what does.

Also considered

  • Ask someone to keep the documents up to date

What we put in place

  • Architecture documents, the slide deck, the inventory and the public architecture page rebuild from the running platform twice a day.
  • An automated reader compares the documents with the live system and flags drift.
  • A scanner flags anything added that the register does not know about yet.
  • A health check posts the result to Teams and email after every publish.

The result

Before

The documents described a platform that did not exist.

After

The architecture page on this site is drawn from the platform's own register and checked before it is published.

I make documentation a by-product of the system, so it stays true.
