The business question · Self-healing operations

“What happens when it breaks at night?”

The concept

Detect, fix, escalate

Known problems are fixed automatically, and anything unusual goes to a person with evidence.

How it works
Monitoring finds the fault, a standard fix runs for known problems, an agent investigates the unusual, and a person is called only when it is risky.
Why it matters
Fewer night calls, faster recovery, and automation the business can trust not to make things worse.
The result
Outside alarms caught an unannounced stop within minutes, and routine faults are fixed before anyone has to look.

The business problem

Problems at night either wake someone or wait until morning.

Most operations teams either wake someone for every alert or trust automation that nobody has tested. The platform runs around the clock with one owner. Problems had to be found and fixed without waiting for a person, and without automation making things worse.

Why this concept

A layered response: detect, standard fix, agent investigation, then a person for anything risky

Automation that fixes everything is dangerous; automation that fixes nothing is noise. Layers keep both in check.

Also considered

  • Fix everything automatically
  • Send every alert to a person

Monitor

Spots the fault

Standard fix

Runs for known problems

Agent

Investigates the unusual

Person

Called only when it is risky

Incident closed with evidence

What we put in place

  • Made one incident system the first detector and the single source of truth for machine health.
  • Gave an automation engine a short list of pre-approved standard fixes.
  • Put the main agent on call to investigate and explain, with a person deciding anything risky.
  • Limited retries, so automation stops and alerts a person instead of looping.

The result

Before

Problems at night either wake someone or wait until morning.

After

Outside alarms caught an unannounced stop within minutes, and routine faults are fixed before anyone has to look.

I design operations that are safe to leave running, with people where judgement is needed.

In your organization

Fewer night calls, faster recovery, and automation you can trust.
